A battery shutdown, or putting the bike into sleep mode, has multiple purposes:
- Storage purposes: It puts your Generation 2 bike to “sleep”. Shutting down the battery means all electronic functions will be off.
- This means that the bike's location and internet services will be off, so the bike will not do a 24-hour telemetry upload, and also not react to movement alerts and send its location when locked via the button. This also means there is no self-discharge, since these services always drain power from the battery (~3% per day), even when idle.
- The battery then does not run the risk of being deep-discharged when left unattended for a long time, assuming that it was fully charged before putting the bike into sleep mode. It can only be turned on again with an Ampler charger under current.
- These anti-theft location and internet services will be off while in sleep mode, but the button-lock, which should be toggled on beforehand, makes the bike virtually unusable for any thief, even if they manage to turn the bike back on again with an Ampler charger. Once the bike is then turned on while locked and GPS/GSM signals are available, the bike will send movement alerts, its location and other data once again. Note that we do not sell Ampler chargers to anyone unless the bike ownership is verified. Read more about this in our anti-theft policy.
- We recommend putting the bike into sleep mode if you don't intend to use it for more than 4 weeks.
- Troubleshooting purposes: Since it simulates a disconnect between battery and bike electronics, it can help “jumpstart” the connectivity functions, when the GPS/GSM modem is not acting as intended. For example, if the location in the app is not updating when it should, or if you constantly see a grey or yellow triangle on the display, even if your bike should have a GSM connection. Follow the full troubleshooting guide here, which also explains when and where location and statistics should update in the app.
Only perform this when you have a charger at hand
Once this process is performed, you can only turn on your bike again with an Ampler charger under current.
Here is how to put the bike into sleep mode and turning the bike back on is performed:
Sleep mode via the app (preferred and easier method)
- Make sure your bike is fully charged (LED on the charger remains green when attached).

- To turn the bike back on again: Connect the charger, which in itself is attached to a wall plug under current, to the bike, wait for it to turn itself on, and then remove the charger.
- Place your bike in a spot with potentially good signal strength and wait until all the triangles on the display disappear.
- If you locked the button via the app beforehand, unlock it again through the app.
- Now, when you finish a ride and turn off your bike, your statistics, location, and the status of your bike should update in the app shortly.
Sleep mode via the power button:
- Make sure your bike is fully charged (LED on the charger remains green when attached).
- If you are planning to not use your bike for more than two weeks, connect your bike to the app and lock the button via the app dashboard.
- Make sure you are in a location with potentially good GSM signal strength, e.g. the GSM signal bars on your phone are full.
- Press the button continuously for about 30-40 seconds, your display will cycle through some symbols. Do not stop pressing until you see any of the screens below. Your bike will now be in sleep mode and will not react to button presses.
- To turn it back on again: Connect the charger, which in itself is attached to a wall plug under current, to the bike, wait for it to turn itself on, and then remove the charger.
- Place your bike in a spot with potentially good signal strength and wait until all the triangles on the display disappear.
- If you locked the button via the app beforehand, unlock it again through the app.
