All about wheels & tyres

Wheel size is not a very good indicator of whether a bike is right for you. If you want to know which frame size is best for you, we have a few tips here.

The tubes we use on Axel, Juna Stout and Stellar have 40 mm Schrader/auto valves, Curt has 42 mm French valves, also called Sclaverand or Presta.

Over the years, we have occasionally changed the tyre manufacturer that we fit on our bikes – so have the sizes. You can find the tyre manufacturers here in the respective model specification list.

Here is a short overview of the wheel, rim and tyre sizes:

Generation 2 models

Wheel size Axel & Juna: 27.5″, all other models: 28″.

  • Juna: 50-584 mm, internal rim width: 24 mm
  • Curt: 40-622 mm, internal rim width: 19.2 mm
  • Stout: 47-622 mm, internal rim width: 24 mm
  • Stellar: 47-622 mm, internal rim width: 24 mm

If you want to use tyres with spikes or with a bigger tread, make sure they properly fit your bike before riding.

Can I have wider tyres?

The frame geometry is designed to fit the tyre size we use as standard, and we generally do not recommend using wider tyres as we cannot rule out problems with mudguards and frame.

Thus, wider tyres can only fit if the mudguards are removed. The tyres we offer for Generation 1 Curt are 32 mm wide, and by removing the mudguards it is possible to fit a maximum of 40 mm tyres. We don't recommend any wider tyres on our Generation 2 models.

Please note that the dimensions of the tyres are not always the same, i.e. the nominal size of the manufacturer and the real size often differ. Even if wider tyres might fit at first glance, issues can quickly arise if the rim is out of true/uneven.

Are smaller tyres possible?

With Generation 1 Curt you can go down to 28 mm, with Generation 1 Stout and Stellar you can lower the width to 32 mm wide tyres. We can't offer these tyres ex-work, but any bike shop can give you advice on which tyre fits your need.
